On our recent visit to Portland we had dinner at J's Oyster . I had Haddock for dinner and the hot sauce was Captain Mowatts Canceaux . I enjoy a good hot sauce that is not so hot you need to wash it down, but at the same time not so wimpy that you need to keep dumping more on ! Our son was always raving about this and insisted we try it. He brought some over and we’ve been hooked ever since. We use it on everything, eggs, meats, pasta, salads etc. I only wish my local grocery stores would carry it. My IGA did, but not anymore. It’s worth the price but would love to avoid shipping. However their shipping packaging was outstanding. Highly recommend this sauce!!

I love your sauce. I tried it at a diner in Portland on New Year’s Day this year. It’s the perfect blend of heat and flavor. Tried this sauce at a diner in Portland, Maine. The second it hit my taste buds I asked where to buy it, it was that good. I was trying to strategize how to order more of This since I live in MA, but found this website. I have always loved this sauce but I'm not sure if they changed the recipe. It is soooooo spicy now I can't even use it. I'm wondering if I got the spicy version by mistake. This sauce is wayyy darker than it normally is too.

This is good stuff, very good stuff. First time for my son (a bbq/smoke star) and I to try any of the Captain and this is very good. My first taste I thought it was sweet. But my son, and wife, said wait for it. And it came, softly at first and then hotter at the end. Good, solid, red pepper bbq sauce. Not too hot at all, but soft and warm, and hotter at the end.
Now we’re going to have to buy more of the Captain.

My parents discovered this sauce in Portland in about 1997. Now, 25 years later, restocking our supply of Canceaux and Canceaux Turbeaux is a family tradition at Christmas time. We try a lot of hot sauces, but nothing has come close to toppling these two from the top for us. Thank you!

Here's the truth of the matter. I received a bottle of Canceaux sauce and unfortunately the top was broken off the bottle when I opened it. I contacted Captain Mowatt's and they shipped a new bottle to me immediately. It arrived the next day. I couldn't wait to try the sauce as I had only had a taste of it when I tried it at a local crafts fair. The sauce didn't disappoint. It was delicious (on thinly sliced pork chops)! Easily my new favorite sauce, without question. I’m a Massachusetts native, and I happened to stop at Becky’s Diner while traveling through Maine. I saw a bottle on the table and noticed it was made in Portland, so I had to give the local flavor a shot.

I took a seared tuna steak, cubed it.
Next a corn chip, with a smear of guacamole, to hold the tuna in place and dollop of
